Course details

This module is a core module and is essential for students undertaking full Masters. The module provides students with the opportunity to work on a substantial piece of independent project work which consolidates and further develops the skills and knowledge they have acquired across the whole of their degree in an area of applied leadership and management practice, workplace problem solving, or academic research. In doing so they will develop their critical reflective, analytical, and transferable employability skills.

Detailed guidance will be provided to enable the student to select one of the following project options:

• A critically Reflective Summary Dissertation

• A Research Project

• A Work Based Learning Project.

Students will be guided to make an informed choice of project option as part of the negotiated learning agreement, and they will work independently under the guidance of a supervisor. All options will provide students with the experience of utilising principles of research and academic writing and thus demonstrate the intellectual skills acquired on the course. While the Summary Dissertation and Work Based Learning Project do not take the form of a traditional academic research paper, they must be based on rigorously undertaken primary organizational research.

Aims

• To enable students to produce a substantial piece of academic work that synthesises their knowledge and understanding from across the degree programme and builds on previously acquired subject-specific and transferable skills.

• To engage students critically and reflectively in developing their own learning and examining a leadership or management topic.

• To extend students’ critical appraisal skills to effectively communicate findings.

• To develop academic expertise in a particular area of their choice related to their management and leadership practice.

What and how you will learn on this module

The subject of the Capstone Project and the specific aim(s) and learning outcomes arising will be unique to each individual student. Students will negotiate with their university tutor and, if undertaking a Work Based Learning Project, their employer, an agreement in which they will identify:

• the objectives, scope, and (for a Research Project) research question of the project

• the unique aims and learning outcomes

• the method by which the outcomes will be achieved

• how the project will develop the student’s capability in respect of their effectiveness, employability and/or business competitiveness

• the resources needed, including materials, equipment, time and support from work colleagues and the university

• major progress review points

• target dates for assessment.

During the course of study these will be further developed and rationalised through a series of tutorials, workshops, and discussions between the students, academic supervisor(s), colleagues and the module leader.

If undertaking a Research Project students should collect new data or analyse a pre-existing data set. Where it is not possible for students to access suitable data sets a meta-analysis or systematic review may be acceptable after scrutiny and approval by the academic supervisor, module leader and course director.
