Course details

 This is an option module within the MSc Healthcare Practice programme and may also be taken as a free-standing module. It is suitable for registered nurses wishing to gain insight into the knowledge and skills required to provide evidence-based care within a primary care setting. The module content reflects the diverse nature of this area of practice and includes the exploration and critical analysis of contemporary professional issues, screening and health promotion, skills-based competencies and the management of long-term conditions.

 

Aims:

The module will enable nurses with no previous specialist knowledge to gain an evidence-based understanding of the knowledge and skills required for general practice nursing.

 

What and how you will learn on this module

 

How you will learn:

This module is delivered using a blended learning approach which integrates a variety of on-campus and online activities, supported by Canvas, the University’s virtual learning environment. A complementary range of activities are employed to engage you in the critical exploration of key topic areas, and the completion of formative tasks during the module also helps to keep you on track with the learning and gain feedback on your understanding of the content. A sense of community is developed and maintained with frequent opportunities for peer learning, enabling you to share your practice experiences and to learn from each other. Level 6 and level 7 students taking this module may be taught together.

Academic writing and critical thinking skills are developed through ‘The Critical Thinking Skills Toolkit’ and other academic practice activities embedded within the module, that have been designed to nurture the skills needed to facilitate you to become a thoughtful, objective and reasoned thinker. This will help you tackle the assignment(s) confidently, understand marking criteria, use evidence, take a reasoned approach, make structured arguments and engage with other points of view.

Assessment

Reflective essay (4000 words) and Competency assessment document

 

Learning outcomes

Demonstrates an in-depth knowledge of contemporary issues and health care policy relating to the structure and delivery of primary care services.

Identifies and incorporates applied knowledge of the relevant pathophysiology at all stages of the care journey, including assessment of patients within primary care.

Critically appraise the professional, ethical and legal issues influencing practice within a multi-professional primary care setting.

Critically examine the holistic assessment of patients in primary care utilising a range of strategies, including facilitation of health promotion.

Synthesise and evaluate existing theoretical discourses and practices to deliver effective health promotion intervention from a primary care base.

Critically consider the management of a condition using evidence-based care and formulate a plan for enhancement of service provision.
